PETRA-bee — Certified organic beekeeping project by Calzaturificio Petra

Certified organic beekeeping project

Environmental sustainability is no longer an option, but a concrete responsibility toward the land, local communities, and future generations. Bees are among the most important environmental bioindicators: their health directly reflects the quality of the surrounding ecosystem. Protecting them means contributing to biodiversity conservation, preserving agricultural landscapes, and maintaining natural ecological balance.

From this awareness comes PETRA-bee: a certified organic beekeeping initiative through which Calzaturificio PETRA transforms environmental commitment into a tangible action to generate a positive, measurable, and communicable impact.

The project

PETRA-bee takes shape through the adoption of ten beehives and the establishment of an apiary in the area of Montespertoli (FI), managed in collaboration with Podere Montebornioli Farm and beekeeper Giovanni Viviani. The colonies — new bee families with queen bees — are housed in customized hives and placed on dedicated supports, in full compliance with proper beekeeping management standards. The adoption of ten hives represents a meaningful and consistent commitment aligned with our sustainability and environmental protection goals.

The location of the apiary was carefully selected, taking into account the stationary nature of the operation, the correct hive orientation during colder seasons, the availability of nectar sources and water points, and protection from prevailing winds. These conditions ensure the well-being of the colonies throughout the entire year.

A comprehensive commitment to sustainability

The project's objectives are based on a sustainability vision that places the well-being and protection of bees at its core, achieved through rigorous practices and protocols.

Certified organic method

All materials, inputs, and products used are certified organic, preventing any form of contamination from pesticides and environmental pollutants.

Stationary beekeeping

A carefully selected and permanent location eliminates the need for hive transportation and completely removes the stress associated with moving bee colonies.

Responsible beekeeping practices

Careful colony development, feeding based on the honey produced by the bees themselves, annual wax renewal, and continuous monitoring of food reserves, diseases, and overall colony health, using only authorized organic treatments and management practices.

A concrete initiative through which PETRA strengthens its environmental commitment and reinforces its connection with the territory in which it operates.
